Mark, Helen
and Michelle Stewart were moved by the plight of the brumbies in
the wake of the October 2000 cull in Guy Fawkes River National
Park. In May 2004, they established Combalo Heritage Horse Stud on the family
property near Armidale to ensure the future of the breed and as
homage to the brumbies’ forebears, who served on the World War
battlefields. Their family also has historical connections with
the Guy Fawkes brumbies.
Their stud’s
foundation stock are from the National Parks and Wildlife
Service’s trial capture and removal program. Marengo, his mares
and their offspring were selected as they are some of the finest
examples of Guy Fawkes brumbies. Not only do they have excellent
conformation and good feet but they have great temperaments. It
is this willing to please attitude that impresses the Stewarts.
It also means the horses are easy to handle and train.

The Stewarts
longed to add some of the renowned Guy Fawkes creamy brumbies to
their stud. The creamies are prized not only for their colour
but also for their ancestry; which goes back to Saladin, one of
the foundation sires of the Australian Stock Horse. After two
years of the NPWS capture and removal program, the opportunity
finally presented itself and the Stewarts purchased three
creamies; two mares and a colt. |
